Tricia's Interwoven

I am very excited to join your group. At first I was not sure what to do for the theme Interwoven but I kept thinking about birds nest and how they are magically woven.  I just love watching the birds in my yard.  Last spring I was able to photograph some baby birds in a nest right outside my dining room window.  I printed my photograph out and then created a nest from different materials I have.  I have wanted to start printing my photographs and using them more in my quilts.  So I guess this is a start.

How I went about creating my piece was to first print my photograph on printed treasures.  I then cut away some of the backing.  I free motioned the branched and leaves onto the backing.  I then started looking around my studio for ribbon, twin and yarn to create my birds nest.  I had recently discovered a wasp nest in a bush in my yard.  I brought the wasp nest in a pulled off several paper layers.   I layered the material I had gathered and started free motion stitching with a variegated thread with a zig zag stitch.  I kept going over it up, down and sideways and adding more materials as I went until I felt there was enough to create the next.  I then created the leaves and stitched them down with a vine stitch up the center.

  1. And a superb start it is, Tricia! Welcome to the group, and we are all so pleased you have joined us. I would love it if you'd include a few more details about the construction of your quilts! Notice the posts by Nedra, Kathy, and Judy W. Even notice mine! All of these include enough information about construction so that if anyone wanted do, they could incorporate some of the methods in future quilts. I've asked Andrea to give us a few more details, too! But back to this work of art: By clicking on it, I could see the variety of materials you used and see just HOW you used the wonderful photograph of the baby birds. And to me, it is pure genius that you connected nest building to this Interwoven theme!

    2. Thank you, thank you! Your description of the design process was clear and precise. I am intrigued by the "layering" that you did, and I hope soon to try my hand at using this wonderful process!

  3. A warm welcome from Alaska Tricia. Your nest fiber choices are perfect and I'm glad the close up view displayed that, as well as your photo of the babies. Sure wish we could view our artwork firsthand to observe all the fine details. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work this year.

  4. Fab Job, Tricia! A very touching piece. I enjoyed your telling of all the methods you used. Very nice and it stretches my imagination. Hope the wasps didn't get your photo!

  5. Tricia, I thought of a birds nest too, but mine would not have been as creative and tactile as yours. What fun it must have been to incorporate all those textures into your piece as well as adding your own photo. Welcome to the group!

  6. Lovely! I am a 'bird' person and would get ever so much more done were it not for the bird feeders and bird bath just outside my sewing room window. The texture of the nest is wonderful.

  8. Great job ! Loved that you used your own photograph of the baby birds, and your choice of nesting materials was incredible. Wasps ! Never in a million years would I have gone near a wasp nest nor thought to use pieces parts of it in a quilt ! In fact, I've never thought wasps had any redeemable qualities (except, perhaps, to other wasps !) Welcome to the MMs - you're off to a great start :-)

  9. I think your interpretation of the theme was brilliant!
You have so successfully & seamlessly incorporated your photo of the baby birds into the multi-layered nest that I had to look really closely to see that you had used a photo. Once again, brilliant and welcome!
