Tricia's Friendship Quilt - Millie and Pearl

This is my grand daughter Pearl and our dog Millie.  I was having a hard time deciding what to create for our friendship quilt.  I had finally decided to use a photograph of our two dogs.  They really care about each other.  Then our son and his family were visiting for a week over the 4th.  I was sitting in the room when Pearl went over and kissed Millie.  I was able to get a quick shot of them.  I decided that was the perfect image I wanted for my friendship quilt.

I had never created a quilt with a person or an animal before.  It help that Pearl's face was in profile.  I am happy with the quilt but would like to take some classes to learn how to thread paint people and animals.  Since I was working at the last minute I had ordered some flesh colored fabric but it has not yet arrived.  I went to the local fabric store and found the flesh fabric.  I think it would have been better to have a little more color.  It was fun and I have a new challenge to work on.  Anyone have a suggestion for a portrait teacher?

  1. Oh, Tricia, as a devoted grandma and dog lover both, this quilt tugged at my heartstrings! You rendered the picture in fabric beautifully. I LIKE the soft colors contrasted with the bright striped outfit. As for portrait teachers, you need some input from new member Gail, who does these masterfully. I personally took a class from Marcia Stein, but she uses people in profile or from the back in her quilts. I also took a class from Esterita Austin, not in portrait quilts, but she now emphasizes these in her latest workshops. Lots of books out there, too; I have many. In an email, I'll share the titles with you!

    1. Too, MMs Kathy and Rita have all thread painted people and Kathy did that wonderful dog portrait! Using a different technique, Rita also did a dog portrait. What resources, just in our group!

    3. You don't need to work on anything! Your quilt is wonderful. You created the figure so huggable and the dog as well. The unique angle is refreshing.

  2. Tricia, our newest member, Gail Bradney, is an excellent portrait quilter. She is mostly self-taught using photographs as you have. However, she has taken many classes and can recommend some teachers.
I love your quilt and love to see the dog included in the Friendship theme. Our pets can indeed be our closest friends sometimes.

  4. Just love that you did Pearl and Millie! How perfect!
I think your colors are lovely! The red of the blanket and the reds in Pearls dress attract your eye to her sweet kiss! And Millie's face is so gentle and appreciative looking! Really nice one! Is this going up on the wall in Nantucket or Weston!!!!

  8. Hi Tricia .... This is one of those quilts that just melts your heart ! In this one small 12" x 12" quilt, you were able to capture a beautiful, lovely and oh-so-precious story. As Carolyn mentioned, this quilt will truly become one of Pearl's most treasured treasures !

  10. Cannot believe this is your first attempt. Dogs and children, a subject that never tires. Good balance and color. Those stripes are hard to manage. Love this little quilt that says so much!
