Andrea's Contrast Quilt: Autumn In Boston

hand dyed cotton, commercial cotton, screen print, printer,
machine pieced, fused, machine quilted

Initially, I must have jotted down at least 8 different ideas for this theme, as it really captured my imagination.  I then put all ideas aside until September.  I narrowed the list down to one, but before I started to work on it, I had the occasion to email a friend regarding what the weather could be like in Boston in October, as she was planning a short visit.  Due to that email I went in a completely different direction.  ( I'm always amazed when things like that happen! ).

I love the contrast in the fall between red, orange, yellow, and green leaves against a clear bright blue sky, so this is what I have tried to represent.  A maple tree in a neighbors' yard started to change colors sometime in August and the fallen leaves were actually pink and green, which fascinated me.  The color pattern on these leaves reminded me of my snow dyed fabric, so I knew I wanted to "feature" these particular leaves.  I used my printer to make color copies of the leaves on to fabric.
I also wanted the quilt to include examples of both high and low contrast, which is why I screen printed the building in blue, as close to the background as I could without it disappearing, to represent low contrast, as does the portion of the left leaf that is on top of the strip of pink/orange snow dyed fabric.
I have really enjoyed working on, not only this particular theme, but the new 11 x 14 format as well.

  1. Having just been to Boston and witnessed the lovely changing leaves there, I totally appreciate this quilt! And what a neat idea to use both low and high contrast! I would never have thought of doing that!

  7. Oh my gosh .... Where to start ! Absolutely fantastic ! You documented "Contrast" in so many different ways. High / Low contrast; snow-dyed fabric / commercial fabric; cool color / warm color; organic leaves / photo-printed leaves. And of course, your thermofax screen - stunning ! As always ... Fabulous !

  8. It has been so long since I've seen color contrast in fall that I certainly would not have thought of this. I do love it. Very effective demonstration of high and low contrast. I do love the way you combined techniques to produce the leaves and the background buildings

  9. In Texas the leaves go from green to brown and then fall off the tree from fatigue at some point. Your beautiful quilt immediately took me home to Oklahoma and the fall colors. Last year my sister sent me a package of fall leaves and I just sat on the bed and cried. I wish I knew how to thermofax as it adds a different dimension that is just stunning.

  10. Pink fall leaves.........who knew? This is a wonderful CONTRAST quilt with so many examples of contrast. The screen printing is just perfect as the low contrast background. I am taking a screen printing class at International Quilt Festival this year. So hope I learn enough to be able to do something as wonderful!

  11. October Blue! That is my name for the sky in the fall. It is so clear and a special hue. I have never been to Boston or New England, but Arkansas has some wonderful fall foliage years.
I have recently been doing some screen printing, but none of it is as intricate as yours. I love the effectiveness of low contrast in your quilt.
My husband brought me a leaf last week that is pink and yellow. I had never seen one before. I may try to preserve it.
    Love your quilt!

  12. I know exactly what you mean about the contrast of fall leaves against a beautiful blue sky! I think you accomplished what you set out to show perfectly and love that you showed both high and low contrast. This is a great piece, Andrea!

  13. Love the low/high contrast. That never entered my mind. The screen printed building really makes the quilt come together. You did a beautiful job to put all those components together to make this quilt sing.
