Tricia's Contrast - Spring / Fall on Lake Willoughby, Vermont

My husband's family has a house on Lake Willoughby, Vermont.  It is in the Northeast Kingdom.  The view from the house across the lake and into the notch is always amazing! We were recently up there with the fall colors emerging. I thought it would be interesting to show the contrast of the view in the spring with new leaves with how the colors change in the fall .  I took the left side of the notch and made the spring leaves and the right side  created the fall leaves.  It was a natural break between the mountains.  I used fabric, machine stiching and Pental pastel dye sticks to enhance the colors.  In looking at all of our photos of the two seasons I also noticed how much our yellow raft contrasted with the  blue lake so I included the raft.

  1. What a clever notion--to portray the contrasting colors of spring and fall in one quilt. And the yellow raft against the blue water--the perfect touch! (Have you ever read the wonderful book entitled A YELLOW RAFT IN BLUE WATER, by the late Michael Dorris? A sad but memorable book I can highly recommend!

  2. Having lived in New England for many years, I have witnessed the changing leaf colors and beautiful blue lakes and this takes me back to the time I've spent there. Clever to portray spring and fall side by side on the water!! The yellow raft is the perfect contrast to the blue water. Nicely done!!

  5. What a lovely piece ! Tranquil and peaceful, and obviously full of wonderful memories ! I loved the way you compared / contrasted (!) the different seasons on the lake, and your fabric choices were great. I really enjoyed the way you used fabric to portray your clouds, and the quilting that really made me feel like we watching the clouds move through the sky. Great job !

  7. I like the way you depicted both seasons on the lake. Certainly a contrast - your little yellow raft is a wonderful spot of color. Another quilt that makes me want to visit New England in the Fall.

  8. My first trip to New England taught me the meaning of frost heaves. I almost gave birth in the car going over one. How lucky you are to have this view and thank you for sharing with the rest of us in your beautiful quilt.

  11. Very nice. I love the reflections in the water and the addition of the yellow raft. Fall remains my favorite season, but spring keeps moving up with its promises after winter...

  12. I too wanted to depict the contrast of spring to fall, but my efforts were not presentable. If you look at the photo of my "work table" you'll see prints of leaves in a couple different sizes. I'm glad you were able to make such a lovely quilt. It most probably works so well because you have such a wonderful place to go to. I too love the reflections you added and the yellow raft truly needs to be there.
