Nedra's Quote - The Emerald City of OZ

The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies as a child.  I loved it, but those flying monkeys and the witch scared me so much I had to cover my eyes when they came on the screen!!  There were so many memorable quotes from it that I had a hard time choosing my favorite!!

I painted fabric for the rolling hills to which I added dots of fabric paint to mimic the sleep inducing poppies encountered on the journey to OZ.  The Emerald City, yellow brick road, Dorothy , basket, Toto, and the larger poppies are fused, beaded, jeweled and embellished with fabric pens.  I added a little machine quilting to the hills and mylar to make Oz sparkle. The quote is printed on hand dyed fabric.

  1. Nedra, this quilt brought a smile to my face! Truly, it is charming and it brings back a multitude of happy memories for me--seeing the movie as a child for the first time (would you believe in NYC while visiting my NY cousins?), the many times we viewed it with our own children, and, more recently, seeing the movie again with our grandchildren. I never tire of it! Your quilt is beautifully done, wonderful colors, and clever!

  4. This is beautiful. I'm with Alice, it reminded me of seeing the movie as a child - the cowardly lion terrified my sister and she would run from the room when he came out.

  5. Nedra, What a lovely quilt ! The way you depicted the scene is so gentle and calm. I have to admit, I've always been scared and kind of freaked out by some of the characters in this movie, but your quilt makes everything look so peaceful, tranquil, and calm. Great job :-D

  6. talk about detail - wow! all the sparkle (ask Dorothy if I may borrow those little red shoes) the stitched lines in the yellow brick road, the quilting, the painting. how did you do the ghosty faded circle behind the Emerald City? that is a nice touch. and so much detail in the basket and her dress. I am impressed.

    1. The circle and dots around Oz are made from an iridescent fabric that I fused to the background. I love how her shoes came out and I'm sure she'd loan them to you any time!! Thank you-I really enjoyed working on it.

  9. I echo all of the previous comments! It perfectly illustrates Dorothy's comment to Toto. Our children's museum here in Waco (Mayborn Museum on Baylor University campus) currently has a special exhibit entitled "The Yellow Brick Road". Our 3 1/2 year old grandson loves the exhibit and we can't wait until he is old enough to share the story with him.
