Sara's Mystery - The Mystery of the Beyond

The idea for this quilt was fired while taking a class on Improvisational Curves with Vikki Pignatelli at Quilting Adventures this March. I was playing with spirals and luminosity and then decided on a purple spiral tunnel - Purple seems to be the color of mystery, a spiral is a symbol of mystery and the concept of a tunnel with the light at the end is a symbol of the biggest mystery those living face. The techniques were all learned in Vikki's class.  There is a variety of fabric in this - lame bonded to a polyester sheer, a heavy moire and even a scrap left over from a Crown Royal bag my friend had me make a quilt from (she did the drinking not me!)

  1. Oh, wonderful, another Maven using what she learned at Quilting Adventure! Sara, this is so lovely. I love your colors, the superb improvisational curves, the spiral as a symbol of mystery, the light at the end of the tunnel, and the wide variety of types of fabric. And especially your using a Crown Royal bag! Such a striking quilt.

    1. I should have said QUILTING ADVENTURES, with an "S"! Wouldn't it be fun if all the Mavens--well, kinda hard for Petra, for sure--but if all the Mavens from the US met some year for workshops at Quilting Adventures????

  2. Sara,
Love the concept you made the quilt from!
The colors, quilting, and spiral really draw me into the quilt.

Working with different kinds of fabric makes it fun and you used them nicely in combination with the quilting fabrics.
You are becoming quite a master at Vikki's techniques!

  5. That is the biggest mystery of all, I would think...certainly on my mind as I struggled with this theme...and YOU did it! I like seeing a use of a variety of fabrics...It is such a vibrant piece. Congrats.

  7. Sara, your statement about purple being the color of mystery resonated with me. I felt the same way working on my piece! Vikki taught the same class here in Anchorage last Fall and I have hope to use my spiral in something artistic eventually. Great job.

  9. Sara - you really captured the concept of Mystery with your use of the spiral, and the light at the end of the tunnel. Vikki P. would be so proud of you ! I took a class from her when I lived in Anchorage, AK, and use several of her techniques in my quilts. Great job !
