Andrea's Modern

hand-dyed cotton, machine pieced, fused, machine stitched

When I hear the word "modern" I think of the furniture, home deco and paintings of the 1940's and
'50's, the "height" of the Mid-Century Modern movement,  instead of "now" or "in the moment".
I spent quite a bit of time researching information and images both online and at the library to get a "feel" for what I wanted to express.  I finally decided that I would start with a 1950's color palette,  which I was sure I did not have, but decided to pull out some of my hand-dyes and look anyway.  I was thrilled that I actually did have colors to work with.  Along with the color palette, I made a list of descriptive words for the mid-century design movement, and "simple" was the word that resonated the most with me.
I am pleased with how this quilt evolved, although I can't say that I really like it, I might if it were in different colors, but I do think that it represents the "modern" look that I was trying to convey.

  1. The colors of the fifties - who would have come up with that? I'm still blank on the modern theme.

  2. Andrea, I love this! It is quite a departure for you; no screen printing! But I think you captured the theme wonderfully. The stitching on the quilt, the asymmetrical design, the colors--everything, truly modern.

  3. Not my fav color combo either but it works for this so well. Great modern look. I love the quilting you did - similar to the colored shapes but providing appropriate contrast. Well done!!

  4. Nice Andrea! I'm with Alice, you surprised me this time! Oh how I remember those 1950's yucky colors! Love the wonky design and stitching!

  5. I like your contrast of the bright colors and the machine quilting shapes. Your eye goes back and forth between them.

  6. Your quilt is perfect for modern. I haven't tried the wonky piecing yet because I think it might get out of hand with me putting it together. You balanced it well with the large negative space and the quilting that compliments the piece. Even though you used those colors the quilt is quite soothing.

  7. Yes this definitely fits the definition of modern 1950's style. The gray sets off the "in your face" colors. Can just see the Bauhaus and Danish modern look! You did a great job! No wonder the "flower power" eclipsed this look! We needed a rest. Great job!!!

  8. Hey Andrea.... I LOVE this quilt ! And as for "yukky" colors, Hah ! I think they're perfect :-D Your quilting is the perfect complement for the saturated colors, and the entire piece is just about as great as it could possibly be !

  9. I really like the geometric quilting designs you used - very appropriate for a mid-century inspired quilt.

  10. Mid-Century Modern. I remember hearing that phrase on HGTV one day and thinking: "Oh, they must mean the 50's." I never thought about it while I was growing up.
Your quilt is great. I love the choice of quilting lines which mirror your pieced blocks and stripes.
