Lois's Modern Quilt--Newfangled

When I first heard the theme I instantly thought about the first color television sets—newfangled and modern! Anyway so here is my version of Modern.
A bit of appliqué and lots of imaging on my computer and some thread painting! Hope you all like it!

Lois

PS  Lois is on a trip, away from her computer, and so she sent me the photo and the brief description of her quilt.  I was happy to post for her.  She didn't give me a name for her quilt, and so I pulled a name from what she had written.  Alice

  1. Lois, if when you return, you want to "expand" your narrative a bit, that's always possible. But "pictures speak louder than words," as the old cliche reminds us. Your work makes me smile and also, when I clicked to enlarge, all the lovely thread work speaks loud and clear!

  3. Great job! How did you make the background - is that entirely done with thread? Retro, yet modern - love it!

    1. Nedra- I did the background with a blend of paints on paper- then I photographed it and pixelated the photo several times - with smaller and smaller squares - then printed it on fabric - then I sewed between the tiny blocks with variegated threads! Tough on the eyes!
      The tv was thread painted.

  4. This made me laugh out loud Lois. I remember that we were one of the first in our neighborhood to get a TV. Of course, it was black and white. So, my Dad when out and bought a cover for the screen that had horizontal lines with blue at the top, green and then brown. Your clever design brought back this memory! Nice job!

  5. How fun! I'm impressed with those who work with their image in the computer. I am still a cut and paste girl. The colors are wonderful! Thanks for the memories.

    1. My career was as a computer illustrator. So I almost always work out my quilts on the computer first! It's a great way to try out diff colors and compositions quickly for me

  6. So much fun. I remember the day I came home from school to see a truck in the driveway that said color Television on it. Love the thread painting.

  7. Lois, I have to admit I immediately thought of a TV. I still remember when Sears wheeled in our first television! I was 3. My Dad introduced me to Mickey Mouse cartoons in black and white. I was mesmerized. What a long time ago that was! I love your interpretation! We can all relate. How DID you do that background? It just makes it!

    1. Oh, how young you are! I was a senior in high school when my dad reluctantly bought our first black and white TV! I admit, though, we were the LAST in the neighborhood to get home, unlike Carolyn! Then my first color TV came long after Bob and I married. We are OLD!!!!! Uh, oh, I see Kathy was a child too when she got her first TV. Gee, are you youngsters gonna put up with ancient Alice very much longer?????

  8. Lois, your "Modern" immediately made me flash back to when I was little and we got our first black and white TV with what had to be the tiniest screen in the world, especially compared to the giant screens there are today.
What a great interpretation of this theme :-D

  9. I love where you took this theme and you have certainly set this TV in a very modern piece of furniture. I also like the color combination. There seems to be so much texture here - is the background a print or have you done something to it to give it that pixelated look? Our childhood TV had tubes that my dad was always replacing

  12. This old lady certainly remembers our first TV. I was twelve and lived in central Illinois in the country. At that time we had only 2 stations, St. Louis and I think Champaigne, Illinois. We could count on a signal that was viewable only about 2 to 3 days a week. But we loved it! Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Oh, and I love your little quilt and please revisit as some point and tell us all about the background. It is awesome!
