Rita's Daydream

The  image that came to me with clarity was gazing at clouds, finding shapes, and enjoying the daydreams  from those imagined shapes.  Is the little girl in the quilt daydreaming of a south sea adventure in her own little sailboat?

The background was created using a technique developed by Anna Faustino and detailed in her book, Simply Stunning Woven Quilts.  I started with two log cabin blocks with the square in the upper right corner.  The blocks were cut into strips between the seams, one vertically and one horizontally, and woven together.  I cross hatch quilted the woven square using a serpentine stitch and variegated thread.  The black design and the clouds are fused on top of the background square.

This quilt is gallery wrapped around a 12 inch x 12 inch x ¾ inch wooded frame.

  1. Beautifully done Rita. This quilt really evokes a day dreamer in (in)action! I too love clouds and your use of inter-woven log cabin blocks evoke them so well in such an unexpected way.

  2. Rita,
It took me a bit to see the log cabin blocks. It sure gives it a wonderful feel being woven together. The colors, silhouette, and clouds are just perfect. Love it!

  3. Like Judy, I had to look again to see the log cabin blocks! I love your use of traditional blocks in a new way. How many times as I child I lay on a quilt in our front yard in the summer time, looking through the leaves of a big tree at the clouds, and seeing all sort of objects in those clouds! As we have come to expect from you, a stunning and beautifully conceived and rendered quilt!

  8. What a delightful quilt, Rita. I, too, remember lying on the grass, watching cloud formations, and dreaming up objects that they made. You depicted perfectly this fun part of childhood. A wonderful example of daydream!

  9. Rita...Perfect! When I first saw your quilt I immediately flashed back to many summer days spent on a blanket under a shade tree looking up at the clouds and daydreaming!
I love the combination of the woven technique with the sweet simplicity of the girl and tree silhouette.
