Linda's Spiral - an early reveal

Because I am often in a spiral, I felt confident to work with this theme for September. I have earrings galore which have spiral designs. I often feel like a dancer in a spiral; and I like the zany and untraditional that the symbol connotes.

At a recent quilt show, I obsessed over a seemingly simple spiral block quilt that did not seem to interest others. I casually tried to sketch how to compose the tricky block; so I was pleased to have an excuse to work with the block in detail. All I needed was the two colors of fabrics.

At the NH Mancuso quilt show, in the last vendor booth which I visited, there were batik spirals fabrics perfect for the job. I chose colors opposite on the color wheel to hint at, (somewhat like yin and yang) the good and the bad spirals in life or the world today. I set the small erratic fabric spirals inside the larger architectural spiral of achieved calm. The back of the quilt is a hand-dyed spiral of a same color which I found in my stash.

  1. What a fascinating square spiral. Even though I know that you used two different fabrics, the pink almost looks like a sheer applied on top of the green, creating a transparent effect, which I find mesmerizing!

  5. How coincidental Linda - a square spiral was also one idea that came to my mind when I first thought of spiral - something unique that no one else would do! I love the color choices and enjoyed reading about why you chose them. Nice!

  6. The effect of your spiral is wonderful! The fabric is perfect. At first glance I saw them as 2 different fabrics and then the more I looked it I started to wonder if you had painted the pink one. A spiral to trick the eye. Fun!

  7. Like many in our group, I did think the pink was a sheer overlay. Wonderful fabric choices!

  9. Funny, the sheer overlay didn't cross my mind. Instead, I thought perhaps you'd discharged (bleached) the green batik and then fabric painted it pink. Kathy will probably relate to that line of thinking since we played with discharge and dyeing. I'm also glad you chose a square spiral ~ it feels maze-like. Nice contrast.

  10. Spirals over spirals! And an almost psychodelic pink and blue on green. Lovely!
    Lovely!

  11. How amazing to find both fabrics in such high contrasting colors. I also thought the pink was an overlay, or as Judy W mentioned, that the pink had been discharged and then re-colored. And your backing fabric is absolutely perfect; resembles some of the Shiva rubbing plate designs I used in my piece. Isn't it fascinating what we find in our fabric stashes :-)
