Barbara's quilt--Maui Travels

Mavens, time has slipped away from me again so here is the photo of my quilt unquilted!  My favorite travel place, in addition to visiting grand children, is Maui where my middle daughter, Cori, lives.  This will be the fifth Thanksgiving that we will visit that beautiful island.  The photo that I used for this quilt was taken of the Seven Sacred Pools by my eldest daughter, Jodi.  I have not seen this place because I have a fear of heights and will not travel the road to Hana.  I will see it in photos instead!!
This quilt is a very close up 1" square taken from the original photo that you see below.  It was a practice piece in Sue Benner's Landscape class at Empty Spools Retreat.  The technique is strip fused collage with tulle covering the top.   I think I will take it with me to Maui and hand quilt it on the plane.

  1. Barbara...that is just beautiful. I am trying to do some landscape quilts now and that knocks my socks off. I would rather applique and quilt on a trip in the car or plane than anything. I would love to know more about your decision making...the strip fused collage...and what color tulle you use.

    1. Hi Linda, thanks for your comments. Making decisions about what strips to use is random and I audition many different strips before deciding. Strips can also be added over other strips after everything is fused. I have many different colors of tulle, from JoAnn's(I buy when it's on sale). Dark colors work best, especially black, but you have to try many colors to see which is the look you're after. In this case, I used dark green because of the overall greenness of the quilt.

  2. I've been to the Seven Sacred Pools and my backside will tell you it wasn't the height that was rough it was the road. Beautiful square that definitely does justice to Maui.

  3. Barbara, having heard Sue Benner in my September class with her mention your name and show you in a Power Point presentation, I am thrilled to see your use of her techniques in this quilt. And your brainstorm of using just a small portion of a landscape....love that idea! Can't wait to see it quilted. Don't forget to either add to this post or do another when the quilting is done! And a happy Thanksgiving to you; will be thinking about you in Hawaii as we travel to cold Michigan!

  5. Love the colors, and am hoping that when you finish the quilting and post again, we will be able to see a closer view?

  6. Beautiful quilt, I too want to see what you do with the quilting. The technique sounds intriguing and I love the extraction of a small bit of the landscape
