Judy S.- Snowy Day Comfort

My comfort quilt comes from the wonderful times I spent looking out at the sunset on a snowy day. Snow makes me smile. When the land is blanketed in a fresh layer of snow there is peace, beauty, and I am happy inside. I love seeing sunlight shine on the snow and make all the crystals sparkle. It is magical. I’ve been fortunate to have experienced these special times in the mountains and valleys.
Snow means no school, hot chocolate, a fire in the fireplace, fresh homemade donuts, going outside and coming back inside with snow in our boots and ice on our mittens. To hear the hiss of the wet mittens on the furnace and smell the wool is comfort to me. It was always a great family time and a time when we pulled together to get a job done like when the cows went the wrong way and my sister and I ran to get ahead of them to turn them around. When we got back to the truck we had ice on our eyebrows, eyelashes, and anywhere else moisture could freeze quickly. Amazing.

I painted this piece and then quilted the trees with a dark purple thread and all the rest is quilted using an ecru color.

  1. Hi Judy - By far, this is my favorite of all the quilts you've done. Your story is as real as they come, and it brought me back to the 35+ years I lived in Anchorage, AK. You captured the essence both in your narrative, and in your superb use of materials and thread. Bravo !

  2. Speaking from the land of snow.... you like it much more than I do. Ha. But yes, the childhood memories resurfaced with your excellent narrative. I especially like the luminescent horizon you managed to capture in your painting. I really must give painting directly on fabric a try. Your results inspire me.

  3. A beautiful job! I could almost feel the icy air in my nose and I too have chased the cows that forgot. So from one country girl to another, I love it!

  4. Oh Judy this is lovely. I too love the glow you've created on the horizon and your trees are stately sentinels in the snow. Although I agree much fun and comfort can be gotten from a snow fall , I have returned to my southern roots to escape them!

  5. Judy, I am dying to talk to you about how you achieved this! I am eager to do more painting onto fabric, so I need to know your technique, how or if you prepare the fabric, etc. But that can wait for a one to one conversation. Meanwhile, wow! This quilt is simply lovely, such a pristine, serene scene you've captured. And I enjoyed your reminiscing, too, of your childhood, since obviously here in Central Texas, we have far too few "snow days"!

  7. I am so glad to find another person who loves the snow as much as I do!....and for all those wonderful reasons.
Also, I often did a snow dance, requested by the children, for no school the next day :*) The ecru thread works well and I enjoyed the visit!

  8. Judy, would love to see this in person, it's beautiful. Your painting really portrays comfort. We never had snow days in Southern California but had a few smog days where we had to stay inside--not the same!

  10. Judy, I just love the peacefulness and comfort in this quilt. Loved the story of your childhood as well. All of your quilts are beautiful, but I am really drawn to the serene spirit in this one!

  11. Oh…I'm so glad that I never had to chase a cow, just draw one! What an amazing re-creation of what it looks and feels like after a good amount of snow has fallen..I can also hear the stillness in the air, which I love after a snowstorm.
