Jane Hartfield's Friendship Quilt: Friendship Colors My World Happy!

I don’t know if friendship meets the criteria for a theme word, but I chose it because we are ending the first round of quilt challenges for Material Mavens. I have not been a member for the entire time, but the friends I have made through quilting and this group are very important to me. I love meeting new people through quilting. It affords me the opportunity to make new bonds with like minded people. So…Friendship Colors My World Happy!

I started with a piece of fabric I had dye painted during my  dyeing session when several friends gathered to create colorful fabrics. This piece was “wet into wet” and utilized bright primary colors. I quilted it in free motion hearts using 2 variegated threads in the needle. Then I needle felted a larger heart with bamboo roving, yarn, silk threads, and organza. I direct appliquéd a black felt heart to the quilt, then stitched the felted heart to it. The quilt is finished with black zigzag stitching.

You, my new friends, are quite an inspiration to me. Thank you for welcoming me into your group. Happy Quilting!

  1. Great theme Jane! Love the way you incorporated needle felting. I have been wanting to try it but haven't found a class or good instructions in Atlanta!. And dying the fabric must have been fun to do. Nothing like having control of the colors and it being all your work! Like your heart feathers too! Nice work!

  2. This is a lovely and striking quilt, Jane. And I believe that all of the Mavens have loved the theme. If the quilts posted so far are any indication, I would say that we'd agree that this is THE perfect theme to end our first round of quilts! Thanks for the theme, this quilt, and the fact that you agreed to join us!

  4. I bought a needle felting machine, the Babylock Embellisher, in Houston when it was new. Now there are other machines and felting feet for some sewing machines. I love using it. I have not taken classes on it. Felting adds another dimension to the quilt surface.

  6. I don't know how to felt or most of the other things you did to create this but I loved it. These are the colors I love and it just jumps off of the screen. I frequently don't know what you are talking about technique wise so I just enjoy the beauty. Loved it!

  7. Having fabrics created while spending time with friends is a wonderful start for this piece. I love this format as an opportunity to play with techniques and our beloved tools that otherwise might not get used. You've done a great job of keeping with the theme and using special tools

  8. HI Jane ! You did a great job with your Friendship theme, and your quilt fit the theme perfectly ! (And with me being a "Harte" I was especially drawn to your piece ! ) Your machine quilting really supported the theme, and your use of your custom designed felted heart was the icing on the cake ... Great job !

  11. This quilt has such energy, it makes me smile. I love hearts and have recently become quit obsessed with wet felting techniques, so am really intrigued with your use of needle felting with bamboo roving.
