I found the theme green to be really challenging. After thinking about it awhile and talking with friends about it. My sister suggested looking at the Luna Moth. What a beautiful moth. I picked out a chiffon fabric that was two layers -one side was green and the other a yellowish green. They were woven together a various points which gave the fabric a color that shifted in with the light. It's hard to see in the image. I also picked up a white chiffon with dots. I sewed both layers together. I wanted the wings to be three dimensional. I first sewed the bottom of the moth onto the backing fabric. To create the wings I sewed them separately with telephone wire along the edge to give it shape. I then attached the wings on the top with a satin stitch. I also create the "eyes" with seam a seam and ironed them on. The bark fabric was machine stitched around the knot images.
The luna moth is one of the most beautiful flying insects. They are so secretive that many people have not seen them. Last spring at a retreat in East Texas, there were two of them that were on the wall of the patio area. Many of the ladies had no idea what they were. You did a wonderful job of illustrating the beautiful moth and I especially like the three dimensional art.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought the luna moth was such an exotic creature and you've captured that image so well! I love the three dimensional look and how you used telephone wire for shape and stability. We are such a resourceful group! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the three-dimensional aspect of this quilt is outstanding! The way you constructed your moth reminded me somewhat of how I constructed my bees in the last quilt. But because your moth is a single image, the 3-D nature of it is so much more apparent! Choosing the wood-grain background, too, is a brilliant touch. "clicking to enlarge" is highly recommended for this quilt, to enjoy it even more!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! Love the softer colors, and the way the piece is three dimensional. And the backround works great with it, it pops off it, but doesn't take away from this lovely creature.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely moth! We used to have them when we moved here and I would find their wings when they went off to wherever they go. They really are quite large too. You did a great job portraying them.
ReplyDeleteThis was such a treat to see in person..such beautiful work. Your last two pieces have knocked my sox off for beauty!
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that I have ever seen a Luna moth in person, so thank you for the introduction! Love the 3-D construction and the background is perfect for him be on.
ReplyDeleteThe green of a luna moth is so soft and beautiful. I'm sure the chiffon fabric was a treat to find because it is perfect. I remember when a luna moth would land on our big picture window. It was like it had ridden on a moonbeam straight to our house. It was magic. Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteWell Tricia, I have never seen a luna moth. Now I am so intrigued that I will google to see what I can find out about them. I do love your choice of colors and fabrics, and the three dimensional wings just set it off. I would love to see this quilt in person.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever seen the Luna Moth but I love how you used this image here. The wood grain is a perfect offset for the moth and your 3 dimensional construction is beautiful
ReplyDeleteI wish I could view this in person close up to examine the finer details you talked about. We don't have Luna Moths in Alaska (that I know of), but I think your quilt is a wonderful 3D example of its color and shape. What a neat idea! I'm equally smitten with your choice of background fabric. Very nice Tricia.
