Barbara's Translate Quilt-Bali Whirl

The Bali Whirl is a cultivar of the Plumeria family.  It has 10 petals compared to the normal Plumeria flowers' 5.  This photo is of my very own Bali Whirl plant which is a small tree but has these gorgeous flowers.  I made a drawing and watercolor of the flower in my sketchbook (a translation) and then made a fabric copy of my drawing to use in the quilt.  I collaged leaves from an upholstery fabric and the 3 stripes on the left are fabric from my cotton stash.  I stitched everything down by hand and quilted with Perle Cotton thread.  I love translating my sketching to quilt art.

  1. Yes, this theme was right up your alley, as from the time we first met, I was impressed with how you "translated" your sketches to fabric and thus to quilts! This is lovely, Barbara. By the way, I've been out in your "neck of the woods" for a week now; I leave on Monday, so no time for us to get together!

  2. Barbara, what a lovely translation of a photo into a quilt. This is beautiful. What a thrill to have such a striking blossom of your very own. Love the colors you put with it!

  3. Barbara, You are so right. Art and quilting are translations of your ideas. Love the quilt and the commentary.

  9. Me again. I had a typo in the first edition........ I agree with all of the previous comments! A lovely translation from drawing to quilt. Do these lovely flowers have a scent?

    1. The scents for Plumeria flowers have a range from lemon, nectarine(my favorite), rose, and the traditional hawaiian lei smell. The white Plumeria have light scents where the pink, rainbow and yellow (traditional) have stronger scents.

  10. How delightful! Just thinking of translation as changing a sketch to a quilt is wonderful. I was so challenged by this theme. I love seeing how others have interpreted it.
