Andrea's Blues Quilt

With My Complements

mono-print, hand dyed cotton
11" x 14"

I knew that I wanted to work with shades of blue and because of two recent online classes with Linda Germain, Printmaking Without a Press ( lindagermain.com ) decided to print a panel on a gelatin plate ( gelatin, glycerin & water ), to use as the focus of my quilt.  A geranium plant sacrificed a few leaves for the stencils.  Only two different blue paints were used but mixed with either white or black to create more shades.  Although I was pleased with mono-printed fabric, when assembling the panel with a few hand-dyed pieces, could see that it very much needed to be "spiced" up, so decided that adding a bit of it's complement might work, which made a big difference.

  1. Hi Andrea, Geraniums are one of my favorite plants and blue in the garden is also a favorite. Love what you did with your printmaking skill. And the red definitely makes it pop!

    1. Thanks so much Alice, I was planning on using "free" leaves from plants around my house, but nothing had grown due to the weather, so when I saw this geranium plant thought it could work well for what I wanted to do.

    1. Ahhhh, that was my plan! After getting my BFA went back for a certificate program in "Advertising Design" which it called in between "commercial art" and graphic arts.

    1. Thanks Dee, the gelatin plate is great fun to play with. I love the spontaneity of the process. Have piles of "duds", but that doesn't bother me!

  8. So beautiful and serene! I always enjoy seeing your work. Reading your story and the process you went through make it even better. I love the composition and adding that touch of orange is perfect. It really helps to move the eye around and ground it too. It's a quilt I could sit back and focus on as I meditate.
