What a famtastic theme, something to really get my teeth into. However I am sooooooo disapointed with my quilt. I was thinking along the same lines as Alice and I was going to make 4 different kinds of fabric - 1 earth dyed, 1 burnt etc but time or the lack of it got the better of me. I might revisit this theme at a later stage. I was thinking of the point where the sea meets the beach and the interaction of sand and surf.
My quilt is made with indigo and potassium permanganate dyed fabric which I dyed myself. It's then free rotary cut and then pieced. I still liked it at this point. I liked it untill after I quilted it but hated it after I put the piping and binding on but by then too late xx Will try harder for Mystery.
Turkey Red sounds like someone's email name, but whose????? Mysterious one, please identify yourself!!!!! Click on the little pencil beside the little envelope icon, and that will take you to the compose page for editing!!! We need to know who you are. I,ll wait to comment when I know who the artist here is!!!!
ReplyDeletePetra, thanks for emailing me to let me know who Turkey Red was!! You are too hard on yourself. You had so many great ideas.
ReplyDeleteHi Petra...Dyeing your own fabric with those exotic names, free rotary cutting followed by cozy double needles sewing, puts me on the beach where the tide meets the sand away from the tornadoes Alice must be dodging in Michigan. And the piping and binding increase the security and elemental relaxation of such a setting.
ReplyDeletePetra - I like this a lot. Don't be that hard on yourself. I look at these challenges as encouragement to grow by trying new things and you did just that. Just figure out what you like from this and what you want to improve and go for it - no quilt is unsuccessful - they all provide feedback. That said I do like your approach and thinking here.
ReplyDeleteHi Petra, I'm with Linda - I like the fact that you hand-dyed the fabrics, designed with free rotary cutting and used double needle stitching. Your quilt is free-flowing and soothing - I LIKE it!
ReplyDeleteHi Petra - I really liked that you incorporated your hand-dyed fabrics with all the other techniques you described. The balance between the softness of the earth-tone fabric against the more intense indigo fabric is really interesting. Keep up the good work !
ReplyDeletePetra I like the feel of your quilt and agree with Carolyn - it's soothing. The fabrics complement your theme and I particularly like the foil accents that catch my eye and cause me to think about them in relation to the overall piece. I see the reflective quality of the sun on surf. Nice!
ReplyDeletePetra,
ReplyDeleteI love the sand and surf idea and it is conveyed well in your quilt! The free rotary piecing is so nice and fun. The touches of foil are such a treat because we all want to find some shiny treasure on the beach.
The fun thing about these themes is that we only have a small piece to make and we all learn something in our process. It is a place where we can find out what works for us and what needs to be looked at a bit more. I don't think you realize how we all doubt our results. Yet, when we post we get to see how much joy it brings to others. Thanks for sharing!
Petra, don't be so hard on yourself! It was an experiment with fabric that you feel wasn't successful. I'm just so impressed that you dyed those fabrics!
