Communication – I thought what better way to communicate then
with music? Music is the universal language and is understood by all. It
communicates feelings and thoughts and brings them to everyone who listens.
What better way to interpret communication, I asked myself.
So I started with the idea of Gregorian Chant. An old and not
well known form of singing, and the voice is the instrument of communication. There
are many forms of chant, but this one I heard at an early age and enjoyed the
sound. To depict chant, I put it on an interpretation of an Illuminated Page
for a manuscript, and of course used the letter “C.” It could be for the word
communication or my name!
Other modern musical notes were added using fabric I have
had for years and of course, circles – because everything goes around and comes
back to you.
I appliqued most of the piece by hand, fused some, embroidered the heck out of it, machine stitched some and added beading too.

I also posted this for Off the Wall Fridays which I like to link to.
Carol, how lovely and how brilliant! I love the idea of focusing on the beautiful Gregorian Chant, including an "illuminated manuscript," and all of the rest. What a great addition you are to our group!
ReplyDeleteAmazing, Carol - so much beautiful hand work! I too loved Gregorian chant as a youngster and you've interpreted it and the illuminated manuscript idea so well!
ReplyDeleteYours was the first posting I saw when I opened up MM this morning and it made me smile. I love music, and was comforted by thinking of this timely piece and the beauty of the Gregorian Chant. Your work and that in the book U is for Unicorn inspire me.
ReplyDeleteCarol, this is beautiful. Music, a form of communication? Of Course! I love the Gregorian Chant with illuminated text. And your amazing handwork- wonderful. Thanks so much for a beautiful interpretation!
ReplyDeleteCarol, You are so right. Music is one of the powerful forms of communications. Love the way you designed all your elements. I get the feeling of the language of music instantly and the illuminated manuscript addition to it all is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteMusic...yes! Gregorian Chants are so rich, as is your quilt, with imagery, color, texture and symbolism. What a treat to look linger over, as I keep finding new elements when I do.
ReplyDeleteI must admit I had to do a little research as I wasn't sure what was meant by an Illuminated Manuscript. Now that I have educated myself :), I think you captured it perfectly!! Your piece is filled with detail and textures- much to visually explore. Music a means of universal communcation - how perfect!
ReplyDeleteGreat concept and charmingly executed. I wish the photos got closer details of our quilts. There's lots of fun elements here to peruse.
ReplyDeleteWonderful interpretation and you tied this all together so very well in an intriguing composition with great rhythm.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely thought. You are so right about music. This quilt is wonderful with all its detail and I love the colors and composition.
ReplyDeleteHI Carol - Music ! Of course ! Probably the most universal way to communicate ! I was a bit caught off guard by your comment on Gregorian Chant, " An old and not well known form of singing..." I'm a church organist and as far back as I can remember we've used chants (Gregorian and others) for our church services. In reality, I must admit there are lots of contemporary forms of music that I nothing about (and can't understand) so perhaps I'm showing my age :-D Great quilt, and very thought provoking !
