Tricia's Blue John Canyon in Utah

Hi Everyone,  Here is my canyon picture.  My son loves to do any outdoor sports.   About two years ago he went hiking with his now wife in Utah.   This is a rendition of one of his photographs of the Blue John Canyon in Utah.  They hiked thru this crevice.  The one thing that really stood out for me was all of the cracks and lines in the rocks.  I thought using dupioni silk would give the best texture of the rocks.  I bought several shades of the silk, backed them with Wonderunder  fusible to keep the silk from fraying. Then cut the silk to create many layers of the rocks.  I ironed the silk onto batting.  I pillow cased the quilt and  then free motion quilted to give more texture to the rocks.

I have to apologize that I cant look at all the postings until tomorrow.  I have been in a class all day and I am heading out of town extremely early in the morning.  I can't wait to enjoy looking at everyone's Canyons!

  1. Tricia, this absolutely, literally, took my breath away. I learned a lot and compliments on the gorgeous piece of abstract art that has a personal connection which is what I love about journal quilts.

  2. I really feel like I need to hold my breath to squeeze through the crevice when I view this! Wow, that must have been an incredible experience for your son. How great for you to be able to recreate it in fabric. Has he seen it?? The silk and stitching work well to convey the texture of the rocks - nice work.

  3. You might consider my comment 'off the wall' but I have double vision with this quilt. I see a 'Lady in Red' figure. :D LOVE the silky richness of your fabrics and the weathered rock fissures. Wonderful piece Tricia.

  4. Hi Tricia - Stunning ! I can actually feel the depths of the canyon through your work and although I'm not likely to ever journey through a crevice, I can imagine what it must feel like. Beautiful fabrics and quilting; beautiful perspective that provides so much depth ! Thanks for the beautiful job you did on my special word !

  6. A silk quilt is in my bucket list. Maybe a 12x12 would be the perfect format to start. This is just beautiful. It is so lush.

  8. I googled Blue John Canyon having not heard of it before this. I learned that it was the site of the accident featured in the movie 127 Hours starring James Franco. He portryed Aaron Ralston, the hiker who was trapped by a falling boulder there and was forced to amputate his arm in order to save his life. Oh Tricia!! Your son and wife were very brave!!! Hikers are flocking to it to see it for themselves and others have had to be rescued!! Yikes!

    1. Fascinating, Nedra! We saw that movie; it was difficult to watch! I am so glad to learn more about this canyon that newbie Tricia has portrayed in her quilt!

  9. Oh, the texture and silk fabrics made this such a perfect quilt! Your quilting gives the right amount of cracks and crevices to make me want to stay out of that canyon!

  10. Tricia...I'll admit that I could not express myself any better than Judy did! Your use of silk is perfect along with your quilting at depicting the cracks and crevices.
I too, will stay very far away from this canyon.
