Element - Patti Brooks - Too Hot to Touch

I decided to do an "element" on the stove after being inspired by a workshop by Libby Lehman where she was using the circular attachment on her Bernina. I had bought the attachment with some birthday money and hadn't used it. This piece is reverse appliqued with decorative stitches. I then couched the copper wire as my element with the Cu design from the periodic table for copper. Though I had fun working with the circular foot, the colors were rather heavy. I also added angelina fiber in the center for intensity. My dad used to tell me to get off the "back burner" whenever I was going too slow in some task. I felt like I was making this one for him. Used this technique to make my friend a quilted case for her "netbook" at the same time I was working on this project. Really enjoyed working with the circles and got to play with the decorative stitches on my machine. Patti

  1. Patti I'd thought of a stove heating element and so glad to see your fun approach to this idea. The copper wire is perfect for conducting electricity so this is just wonderful. I'll have to look into the Bernina circular attachment. Haven't heard of it.

  2. That really captures the stove burner but not the back one! I need an angelina fiber tutorial. I bought a variety, one for each of my elements, but forgot to use, not that I would have known how. Dp you spread it out, stitch it down with a somewhat invisible thread and Iron it to melt under a protective sheet? You really caught fire and copper.

  4. WOW ! A stove element never entered my mind, and yet you did a perfect execution of it ! And working with Libby Lehman - isn't she incredible ! ! ! Loved that you got to use your circular attachment for the Bernina.... I have one somewhere; probably safely tucked away in some obscure location :-) Great work.... loved your interpretation.

  5. How totally clever! I have never had an electric stove, so never in a million years would this design have occurred to me. Like Linda I need to learn Angelina;I bought some yrs. ago, after buying my first Quilting Arts magazine, but never have I used it. So striking and lovely, this quilt!!

  6. Great quilt, Patti, and such an "out of the box" idea for element. I didn't even think of the stove element, but it is so appropriate and your quilt is so effective. I, too, have got to find out about that circular attachment!

  7. A very interesting take on element. I never would have thought of this one, but I love what you came up with!

  8. Patti,
How fun is this?! There is a lot in this and it was fun to discover each thing as I read about it. From the "Cu" to the angelina fibers that make the center glow. Libby Lehman inspired both of us to use a technique we learned in her class on our little quilts. I'm glad we had such a fun way to experiment.
The colors sure do make you feel the heat from the back burner. Couching copper wire had to be interesting. Great job!
