I loved this theme but had a very hard time choosing how to represent beauty. Far too many possibilities!!!! I finally decided to focus on the beauty of flowers, which some think of as nature’s angels.
My parents were avid gardeners and my mother worked part time as a floral designer. She often used flowers from her garden to create beautiful bouquets and arrangements for friends and family. I have inherited her love of flowers and their natural beauty, and a little of her skills. Some of my favorites are peonies, nasturtiums, hydrangeas, foxgloves, zinnias . . . —— the list is long!!! Another favorite, because of it’s shape and simplicity, is the angel trumpet. I chose to represent the beauty of nature with a close up of a brightly colored angel on earth!
Limited supplies in my Maine home forced me to use only 2 batiks, one a stripe, and some acrylic paints to create the wonderful shading and texture of the flower. The flower is fused and machine quilted. Three trumpet flowers are machine quilted in the background. I wanted to embellish the flower more but my sewing machine here is a basic Bernina. I plan to add more definition with stitching when I can use my other machine.
Nedra - You have obviously inherited your mother's artistic skills in your talent as a fiber artist. I LOVE the Angel Trumpet flower and have admired then for a very long time. You have created such a beautiful and serene quilt.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Carolyn--you've inherited your mother's skills! And I admire your coming up with a lovely quilt while not in your usual working space. This is so pretty and a great example of the beauty of flowers.
ReplyDeleteNedra - Your quilt is gorgeous ! The Trumpet Flowers are beautiful, and the way you presented your flower is exquisite ! AND, considering you had what sounds like a very scarce amount of supplies, you did an excellent job ! ! !
ReplyDeleteStunning. I love the trumpet flower and your choice of colors.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love that you used what you had and created beauty! Sometimes the limits stretch us and help us grow. Adding that little strip of orange between the 2 green fabrics adds a special balance with the flower. I also like how you were able to match the binding to the background fabrics to make it seamless.
ReplyDeleteReally well composed and I love that you chose to focus on a single blossom. The thin orange strip adds so much interest, as does the different ( textured ) green batik on the left side. I agree with Judy that sometimes having limited materials & supplies can actually be a good thing!
ReplyDeleteYour mom often spoke you of your talents and how proud she was of you. She was an absolutely talented lady and i can see how she inspired you in this work of art. She knew your quilting talents far surpassed hers and she often bragged at Ashton Manor to all the others about it. I’m so grateful to have had you both in my life. I can see now how proud she was and why!
